Symptoms

Page history last edited by Sam Toombs 11 mos ago

I will begin this page by explaining what the four 'defining' features of narcolepsy are:

Excessive Day Time Somnelence: This is, of course, one of the main symptoms of Narcolepsy, it is the need for excessive amounts of sleep, above and beyond that which a normal body would require. These can take the form of involuntary sleep attacks or voluntary need to sleep too much. Sleep attack video

  • Sleep diaries can help chart how much you sleep, SleepinessDiary.pdf (Found here )[No infringement is intended, i do not own this i am just borrowing it. If you own it and want me to remove it just ask]

Cataplexy: This describes the involuntary loss of muscle tone which can result in as little as the sagging of the jaw to a total collapse and paralysis like inability to move. For an example of this watch this video.

Hypnogogic/Hypnopompic Hallucinations: Hallucinations just before entering or after ceasing REM sleep. They can be extremely realistic leaving sufferers disturbed and afraid of what they think was real. There is a very real inability for the sufferers of such a symptom, to tell the difference between reality and dreaming.

Automatic Behaviour: Carrying out routine tasks but without having any memory of doing so once the task is completed i.e. drying the pots without realising you had even washed them up yet.

Less Common :

Restless Leg Syndrome: Constant need to move limbs due to pain or strange feelings in the extremeities such as tickling, pins and needles etc

Myoclonic Jerks: is brief, involuntary twitching of a muscle. It describes a medical sign (as opposed to symptom) and, generally, is not a diagnosis of a disease. It can be irregular or regular, and it may or may not follow a pattern. It generally occurs at the onset of sleep. Although these are irritating they are generally not painful though i do find that some delicate tasks become more difficult, like threading a needle etc

Not necessarily symptoms of narcolepsy, but related annoyingness:

Mental Fog: Due to the fatigue that Narcolepsy causes, many of its sufferers find it difficult to pay attention to things for a long time, or struggle to understand situations or thought. Collectively we have come to term this as a mental fog, due to fact that we know we are capable of such actions but find that Narcolepsy fogs the brain making easy tasks much more difficult.

Aches and Pains: I have heard a lot of PWN talk about back ache and strains and although a lot of people without narcolepsy suffer from these things as well it has been brought up by some members that the reason the PWN get so many aches and pains is due in part to the fact that we regrettably do not get the kind of sleep commonly associated with restoration.
